Newsletter 20th April 2015

Today the Third Sunday of Eastertide.
There is a second Collection today for the maintenance of the Cathedral.
The Justice and Peace Group meet today.
Thursday is the Feast of St. George, the Patron of the Diocese. As a member of the Chapter, I will be attending a meeting of the Canons in the afternoon and we will sing solemn Vespers in the Cathedral.
Tuesday is the feast of St. Anselm, who came from Bec in Normandy to Canterbury and Saturday is the Feast of the Evangelist, St. Mark.
The Confirmation group meets on Wednesday at 6.30pm. Most of the group have sent me the names of the Sponsors and their Confirmation names but there are still a few gaps. Also for those who are attending, a reminder about the retreat on Saturday.
To the School for a Mass on Thursday morning and to Canary Wharf for an investment meeting on Tuesday so quite a busy week ahead.
The small children are enjoying the small house in the garden – but who broke the window frame – nobody owned up. I have carried out the necessary repairs, so take care in future.
Plenty of things to do at the moment preparing for the First Communions and the Confirmations – I am sure that you have the dates in hand – 10th May for Confirmations and 17th and 24th May for First Communions. Also I have to fit in a visit to the College in Spain for a meeting of the Trustees in mid-May.
I think I now have 15 coming on the trip to the College in October so it should be very enjoyable.

Look on the garage roof and you may note that some bees have returned. A local bee keeper is looking after them. It is hoped that that they will help to pollenate the fruit trees. The apple trees are now in blossom and I hope that they will do well. Last year there was not much fruit. Now that the warmer weather is coming, I must attend to the herbs once again.
A report from the railway on the Easter Bank holiday. There were three trains operating. A number of delays so that by the end of the afternoon, our train was running almost an hour late – according to the timetable. It is a single line with passing loops at the two intermediate stations and we seemed to spend a long time waiting to pass and up or a down train.
A prayer for today:
Father of Jesus Christ, open our hearts to your word and to the power of your Spirit. Give us love to discover your will and strength to carry it out today, for you are light, for ever and ever. Amen.
Do you know this poem?
We are Pilgrims, master; we shall go
Always a little further; it may be
Beyond the last blue mountain barred with snow
Across that angry or that glimmering sea.
White on a throne or guarded in a cave
There lives a prophet who can understand
Why men are born; but surely we are brave
Who take the Golden Road to Samarkand.
No recipe this week but a comment from Maria that the recent instruction on making churros comes from South America and not from Spain. In Spain the ingredients are much simpler, mainly the right type of flour and some oil and some water. Hard work to mix it and quite difficult as you have to use boiling water. I am working on it and will report further. Meanwhile the chocolate recipe is working well – my supply of power is almost used up and I will need to restock during the next visit to Spain.
Best wishes to you all
Monsignor Nicholas Rothon
