Pastoral Message from the Archbishop on Assisted Suicide
Following the 2024 Autumn Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, the Bishops have issued a united call for compassionate action to oppose the Bill on assisted suicide. In a joint statement on Assisted Suicide, the bishops have emphasised that true compassion involves caring for and accompanying people through suffering. In the statement, they defend the vulnerable at risk from this legislation, advocate for better-funded palliative care, and express concerns that such a law could lead to a perceived “duty to die” and damage the relationship between medical staff and patients.
The Archbishop of Southwark has written a pastoral message on assisted suicide, copies of which can be found at the back of the church.
Contact your MP
There is still time to contact your MP before the 29th November. The charity Right to Life UK has a simple online mechanism to do this. It takes little more than a few minutes to input your postcode, make sure the suggested text suits your viewpoint and submit your message to ask your MP to stop assisted suicide being rushed into law. The following link will enable you to contact your MP via the Right to Life UK website. https://righttolife.org.uk/ASthreat
Not Dead Yet Uk
Lord Alton of Liverpool has written a letter to all parishes containing postcards created by Not Dead Yet Uk, Anetwork of people with disabilities who oppose legalising assisted suicide and have helped put together postcards with reasons to oppose assisted suicide. The postcards can be sent to your MP, urging them to vote against the Bill. These can be found at the back of the church.
