Today is the Nineteenth Sunday of the Church’s year.

Thursday 15th August is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a Holy Day of obligation and Masses in the Church are at 8 and 10am and 6.30pm.

The days are passing rapidly with many things to do. The school came to collect my books on Friday and the empty shelves look very sad. The big celebration is taking place on Sunday 1st September. Please note that just for this one Sunday, there will not be a 5pm Mass.

I will celebrate the 8am Mass on Monday 2nd September and Father Kyne will take over on this day. I understand that the curate, Father Bellfield, will arrive later in the week.

I am pleased to be able to tell you that Canon Peter Webb will join me for the Mass on 1st September. We went to Valladolid in 1958 and were both ordained in 1964. He now lives in retirement in France. As you can imagine, we have been very close all our lives and it will be a great joy to share this day with him.

I hope that by the time you read this, or pipe organ in the Church will have been repaired. The works were delayed as the new part did not fit and it was necessary to take it back to the workshop. Also, you may have noticed some tree works in the garden. One of the pine trees near the house has been cut back. The olive tree approves of this and straightened out within a few days. Also, the horrid creeping ivy has been removed from the wall of the house.

A, A. Milne is famous not only for Christopher Robin:

Once upon a time there were three little foxes

Who didn’t wear stockings, and they didn’t wear sockses,

But they all had handkerchiefs to blow their noses,

And they kept their handkerchiefs in cardboard boxes.

And a dressing for some lettuce leaves:

Sea salt and black pepper, a little Dijon mustard, a pinch of sugar, 3 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 and ½ tablespoons of white wine vinegar, the chopped yolk of a hard-boiled egg and some chervil leaves.

A short prayer:

Rejoicing un the life of the Church on earth, we join our prayers with all the saints in glory. Amen.

No formal cakes and coffee after Mass on Sundays during in August, but you are welcome to make some for yourself if you can find the necessary ingredients.

A request to the footballers in the garden: please remember to put the footballs back in the rack by the house door when you have finished. I find it difficult to locate them if they are hidden away in the bushes.

No time for travel as the days are very full: in days to come I intend to travel all the way on route 21 to “The Nag’s Head”: it sounds intriguing.

Best wishes to you all,

Monsignor Nicholas Rothon
